Cruzeiro is out of contention for the Brazilian title. With two rounds remaining in the competition, Raposa is mathematically out of competition with Palmeiras and Flamengo for the Brazilian League. The Celestial team ended in a 1-1 draw with Ceara, away from home, on Saturday evening.

Leonardo Jardim, Cruzeiro’s coach, although regretting Cruzeiro’s exit from the title race, was keen to appreciate the battle against the two biggest current powers in the Brazilian league. For this reason, the coach also highlighted the strength of Raposa’s campaign in the competition.

“Certainly, deep down, after qualifying for the Libertadores in the last match, where it was still mathematically possible, everyone thought that something more was possible. It was not possible. We also have to appreciate the quality of our opponents, and it is no coincidence that this year’s Libertadores final was between Flamengo and Palmeiras,” began Jardim, who added:

“That’s why we have to give credit to the quality of our opponents, without forgetting that we played a tournament, in which people sometimes say we lost points, but we gained other points that were not in the calculations. In terms of points, that’s how things are. We are having the club’s best season since 2014.”

A new goal in the last round of the Brazilian League

But in the last two rounds of the Brazilian League, Cruzeiro has a new goal, according to Leonardo Jardim. According to the coach, Raposa wants to remain on the ‘podium’ in the Brazilian league, ensuring his presence in the top three of the leaderboard.

He concluded his speech by saying: “It is important for Botafogo to score enough points to stay on the podium in Brazilian football. It is very difficult to get there. With the exception of Flamengo and Palmeiras, in recent years, there has been a very big change in the teams on the podium. We want to be there this year, and in the future we will be a regular presence on this podium.”
