The initial idea for Paralamas do Sucesso was to be a simple band, with just guitar, bass, drums and vocals. However, the trio formed by Herbert Viana, Pé Ribeiro and João Baroni soon realized the need to expand their vocal and aesthetic possibilities.
In an exclusive interview with CapitalsJoão Baron reflects the path of aesthetic expansion. “He was the engine of that sound, like a mojito,” he highlights the relationship between himself and Bea Ribeiro on bass. This strong and elaborate rhythmic base was essential to the band’s leap, which soon became a “triad with more members”.

Brasilia and memory: Paralamas celebrates its roots in the capital
The big turning point came with the second album, O Passo do Lui (1984), which propelled the band to national stardom. The album features Léo Gândemann’s saxophone, although he was not an official member of the band.
This work reflects a more intense unity, with hit songs such as “Óculos”, “Meu Erro”, “Ska” and “Romance Ideal”. In another interview, Baron commented that “Óculos” was the song where the band found their own sound, despite the obvious influence of new wave and reggae.
The search for that “something emotionally real”, as Herbert Viana often describes it, led the band to build a discography where, even in their first songs, the unique flavor of Paralamas was already noticeable.
“We are a band that continues to this day with the same initial excitement,” he reinforces with the conviction of someone who still has a sparkle in his eye.
All this gas can be seen on Friday (11/21) in Brasilia. Banco do Brasil Estilo hosts the Estilo Brasil Festival, sponsored by BB Visa, Banco do Brasil and Federal Government Cards. Perception is CapitalsProduced by Oh! Arts.
