José Frixanis, painter of the Galician plastic avant-garde, dies in Madrid

Pontevedra visual artist José Freixanes, creator of the Galician plastic avant-garde, died on Wednesday in Madrid at the age of 72, according to sources close to him.

José Frixanis, who was the brother of writer and editor Victor F. Frixanis, began his career as an associate To Grupo Atlántica, the group that in the early 1980s promoted the Galician visual scene from its own perspective, but was open to international trends.

His work is part of the Galician Center of Contemporary Art, Afundación, Reina Sofia Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid, Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid or the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Basque Country, among other centres.
