While Justin Trudeau’s public life continues to generate comments, including comments about his closeness to Katy Perry, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau decided to address the issue for the first time since their split in 2023. The former First Lady of Canada, who left her marriage after nearly two decades with the former prime minister, chose an intimate space to explain how she was dealing with the impact of public exposure: the “Arlene Is Alone” podcast.

The conversation released last Wednesday (12) was moderated by Arlene Dickinson and published by journalist Will Reed on Saturday (15). When Sophie was asked about the repercussions of her ex-husband’s new phase, she summarized her way of getting past the hype surrounding Trudeau’s name. “We are human beings and things affect us,” she said in the episode. “How you react to things is your decision. So I chose to try to listen to music through the noise.”
Arlene didn’t mention Katy Perry directly, but she did point to the “public revelation of what Justin is doing” after joking about their love life. The reference was enough to set the context: Ever since they began secretly following each other on social media, Trudeau and the “Roar” singer have been the target of speculation. Sought by E! News, the couple did not respond to questions regarding their alleged relationship.

In the interview, Sophie avoided commenting on the former prime minister’s love life. Instead, he turned his focus to the post-split process itself. “I’m very aware that a lot of things that are seen in public can be a trigger,” he said. “The woman I become through this is my decision.”
The former journalist and speaker also spoke about raising the couple’s three children – Xavier, 18, Ella Grace, 16, and Hadrian, 11 – and highlighted the partnership even after the marriage ended. “I’m definitely not a single mother,” she said. “I have a relationship with a father who shows deep love and is always there for his children.”

Sophie described the current dynamic with Trudeau as a family structure built on shared decisions. “We have separate lives, but we have one family life,” he explained. “It takes a shared and conscious decision that ‘our family is our greatest creation and we will nurture it together, regardless of whether we walk on different life paths’.”
Although aware of the challenges, Sophie also showed clarity about the path chosen to navigate this new phase. “It’s not always easy to live like this,” he added. “But it’s a very adult life.”
The letter represents a rare public comment from Sophie since the end of her marriage, and adds nuance to the exposure debate surrounding Trudeau, especially at a time when the former prime minister’s name is back in the headlines for reasons beyond politics.
