The Three Wise Men carrying their camels with countless gifts, smiling angels, the Bethlehem Gate, reindeer and snowmen in top hats will light up the streets of Madrid based on the imagination of the city’s youngest residents, their children and their children. … Girls, which are captured in drawings. Martin (CEIP José Calvo Sotelo), Pablo (Our Lady of Good Counsel), Donato (Capitan Cortes), Claudia (Our Lady of Loreto), Lucia (Palomeras), Ambar (Madres Concepcionstas), as well as two third graders with Down Syndrome from the Maria Corredentura Special Education School, will see their drawings transformed into Christmas lights which will be transformed next Saturday, the 22nd.
His drawings transformed into light in colored electric lamps can be admired between the streets of La Salle, Girona, Felipe III, City de Julio, Ciudad Rodrigo and Toledo, in the Centro area. “I imagine it’s fun,” Martin explained months ago. It was already clear to him that he was going to see its lights with his family, just like Ambar, who wanted to meet them in the Plaza Mayor. Donato chose a snowman that represents Christmas, which is “spending time together and playing.” Initially there were six winners, but the city’s mayor, José Luis Martínez Almeida, presented them with a proposal, including those chosen from Maria Corredentura, and they all responded with a unanimous “yes.”
“Probably the most spectacular Christmas lights that will be there this year in the city of Madrid,” predicted the city’s mayor, who presented prizes in the summer for the second edition of the School Drawing Competition for Christmas Lighting Design, which doubled participation this year, with 48 educational centres.
Drawings by first and second graders will become Christmas lights. He explained, “This initiative, which makes us particularly excited, allows those who are the heroes of Christmas, our boys and girls, to be part of the lighting.”
Schools were responsible for selecting one proposal for each centre. From all the proposals, six winning drawings were selected, plus two by Marie Corredentura. The jury appreciated the originality in expression of the characters and emotions related to Christmas captured in his drawings.
Once the winning proposals are selected, the works and equipment technical team is responsible for transforming the drawings or part of them as faithfully as possible into the lighting elements that the city will display next Christmas in the various streets.
In addition to the six winning drawings, the City Council particularly praised the two drawings submitted by out-of-competition third-graders with Down Syndrome from the Maria Corredentura Special Education School. The proposal can also be seen on the streets of Madrid to demonstrate that it is “an open and welcoming city, where everyone should enjoy their time equally.”
