Lakers give up a special arena for the NBA Cup after complaints from athletes: “Oily”

The Los Angeles Lakers will not use their own court for the NBA Cup final on Friday (0000 Saturday in Brasilia) after complaints from players that the court was too slippery. The team played on the Yellow Court in its victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday, but star Luka Doncic said after the match that the floor was dangerous.

His colleague Rui Hachimura said on Friday that the court was “weird.”

“It’s like it’s oily and slippery,” he added. “We all ended up on the floor, literally,” Hachimura said. “We will play on our home court on Friday, so everything will be fine.”

These special courts, painted in vibrant colors, are used for NBA Cup games to differentiate them from regular season games.

A Lakers spokesman told the Los Angeles Times that court officials determined the surface was “unfit for play” but that it would be repaired and would be available for the NBA Cup quarterfinals if needed.

With a 3-0 record in the group stage, the Lakers have earned a spot in the quarterfinals and could gain home advantage at that point if they defeat the Dallas Mavericks today.
