Lenny Wilkins, an NBA Hall of Famer as a player and coach, died Sunday at the age of 88, the NBA said. One of the most dominant players of the 1960s, Wilkins was an eight-time All-Star and an NBA champion as coach of the Seattle SuperSonics in 1979.
He holds the NBA record for games played as a coach (2,487), won an Olympic gold medal as coach of the US national team at the 1996 Olympics and also served as an assistant with the North American national team at the Barcelona ’92 Olympics.
“Lenny Wilkins represents the best of the NBA, as a Hall of Famer as a player, as a coach, and as one of the sport’s most respected ambassadors,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said.
