This Sunday, sports journalism lost a great actor. Luiz Augusto Nunes, a reporter who worked for media outlets such as GLOBO, Revista Manchete, O Dia, Jornal do Brasil and Jornal dos Sports, has died at the age of 76. He was suffering from kidney complications.
Nunes was 76 years old and leaves behind his wife, Seda, and his daughter, Ana Julia. In addition to his newsroom work, in which he covered at least two World Cups, he was part of the communications team at the Brazilian Football Confederation for 14 years, from 2002 to 2016. At the Confederation, he worked as content and website editor.
Nunes was born in the city of Pirai, south of the state of Rio de Janeiro, and was a Flamengo fan. To his friends, like former GLOBO editor Tadeo Aguiar, he stood out for his good sense of humor, love of reading and the excellence he valued in his texts, something he inherited from his beginnings in communications as a proofreader in the 1970s.
— Luiz Augusto was a great journalist. He was very well trained, and since he had worked for a long time as a proofreader, he was very careful with the text. He wrote well, was a great goalscorer and a Flamengo supporter. He was a good-natured man, jovial, but in a good way. He loved to read and left behind a great group of friends, Taddeo says.
The Brazilian Federation also paid tribute to the journalist in a note of condolence:
The Brazilian Federation wrote: “He was born in Pirai, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and was a professional who was very beloved by his colleagues. He appreciated good humour, with a rich collection of funny stories, accuracy of information and respect for the activity he carried out. In this painful moment, the Brazilian Federation sympathizes with the relatives and friends of Luiz Augusto Nunes.”
Luiz Augusto Nunes will be buried on Monday, at 4 p.m., in the Piray Municipal Cemetery.
