Lula goes to Pernambuco to open business amid a stalemate between the allies

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) will travel to Pernambuco next Tuesday (2/10) to hand over the water works as well as hold the opening ceremonies. Against the backdrop of the trip, there is a deadlock between allies in the state that gave him 66.9% of the votes in 2022.

A galaxy of names are seeking to secure a place in the musical chairs for the 2026 Senate race, and it will be up to a Labor MP to decide who will be on his party’s ticket.

At President Lula’s base in Pernambuco, the state where he was born, there are at least four names on the table for the race that will see two vacant seats next year. Current Senator Humberto Costa (PT), former Representative Marilia Arrais (Solidarity), Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho (Republicans), and former State Representative Joe Cavalcanti (PSol).

There are still a number of pre-candidates from centrist parties who have a good relationship with Lula. They are current Senator Fernando Doer (MDB), former Senator Armando Montero (Podemos) and former Petrolina Mayor Miguel Coelho (Uniao).

Mayor of Recife, João Campos (PSB), will be an important element in determining the nominations. The son of former governor Eduardo Campos will run for governor of Pernambuco with Lula’s support and may prefer a close ally, not necessarily a favorite of the Workers’ Party.

Lula is still visiting the state amid a behind-the-scenes dispute over Banco do Nordeste, which has been without a president since former Pernambuco governor Paulo Camara left office in October. The president of the Senate, Davi Alcolombre (União-AP), wants his ally to lead the entity, as columnist Igor Gadelha reported in the newspaper Capitals.

Agenda in Pernambuco

Lula will preside over the handover ceremony of the second Panlas Dam, in the municipality of Cupira, in the context of the Caminho das Aguas programme, which plans to transport water from the São Francisco River to the arid and semi-arid regions of the northeast.

On this occasion, the President also announced the resumption of work on the Igarapiba Dam in São Benedito do Sul.

These works fall within the framework of the Water Security Service in the Zona da Mata Sul area of Pernambuco, as part of the integrated flood control and regulation system on the Una and Serinheim rivers.

“The complex of dams aims to mitigate flow peaks, protect vulnerable urban areas and ensure water regulation for human consumption and regional productive use,” according to Planalto.
