Marina Rui Barbosa says she was surprised by the success and response achieved by the series “Tremembé”, on Amazon Prime Video, which shows the daily lives of notorious criminals in a prison in the city of São Paulo. In the story, she plays the role of Susan von Richthofen, who is convicted of ordering the murder of her parents
“Everyone in the project believed so much in its potential, but we never imagined it would become this phenomenon,” he says. The actress spoke to the column at a party held at the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, on Tuesday night (11), to celebrate Bvlgari’s sponsorship of the Museum of Visual Arts.
“Tremembé” is already the most watched production in the history of Amazon Prime Video since the launch of the platform in Brazil in 2016. “Being able to receive these comments from the audience about my performance was very good. It warms my heart,” she says, regarding the praise for her performance in the production.
But the series has also been criticized for raising real issues. When Marina was asked about the issue, she said that the excitement started with the media and journalists who, through the way they depicted tragedies in the press, made these criminals famous.
She adds that she finds it strange that the true crime genre is so popular outside the country, but is still viewed with reservations within Brazil. “I saw several comments, ‘Oh, I don’t watch the Brazilian series, but I will watch this one.’ There is a slowly breaking syndrome,” he says. “The Brazilian audiovisual industry is going through a very good moment. We have to talk about it, the press has to talk about it, national productions are being exported. We have to be proud.”
The actress also says that the series “in no way sought to romanticize or romanticize” real cases. From her point of view, everything depends on how the viewer sees the production. “The series has a lot of depth, and there are many topics to discuss.”
“Those who watch it superficially may see it as just spectacle, but I think the series is there to bring ideas. There are many topics to talk about when we shine a light on these cases again.”
Marina also argues that “Tremembé” has a bold, well-defined story that the audience may or may not like. “What we’re seeing is that people are loving the show, which I think is great. Now, if they like these people (the convicts portrayed) in real life, that’s something they should look at themselves and rethink.”
