Mauricio Macri: “I’m tired of hearing that Argentina can be like Australia or Canada”
Authoritarians don’t like this
The practice of professional and critical journalism is an essential pillar of democracy. This is why it bothers those who believe they are the bearers of the truth.
What do you see in PRO? Is there a future for Mauricio Macri’s party?
Yes, of course there is a future. PRO is a national party with a presence in all provinces of Argentina, with governors, mayors, councilors and leaders with a lot of experience and ability. So, of course there is a future in the party.
Where does he go? Where is politics today? Some leaders migrated to La Libertad Avanza. Diego Santilli himself took office yesterday as Minister of the Interior. How can PRO be reconfigured from now on?
Argentine politics, not only in Argentina, but in the whole world, is witnessing many changes. The political situation, from 2023 to today, shows that society is elected Javier Miley To implement change and transformation in Argentina. We have worked since that first day, and this is the attitude that PRO has and will continue to have, without losing our identity. We have a presence across the country, we have an identity, we have a party, we have a people.
Today we have the role of accompanying the government chosen by the community so that Argentina can do good work. We will not be found putting a spanner in the works from any standpoint. Yes, there are certain differences, as happened in these years in Congress, in some laws that some representatives or senators did not want to accompany, but in the most important of them the Attorney General accompanied them. I believe that a large part of the success of this government’s rule was because it found an opposition such as the Republic Party, which supported and did not brake the wheel. This government has had the luck that we did not have when we were a government.
Was it luck or accompaniment? What does he refer to?
No, I’m saying so If the Attorney General’s Office had taken an opposing position and blocked everything completely, the government would not have even obtained the Basic LawOr nothing at all. I believe the position PRO has taken in building, promoting and supporting the change chosen by the community is fundamental.
Argentine society cannot resist another failure. We are all waiting for Argentina to finally take off, to move forward, for the economy to do well, and to start producing the changes it needs. It seems to me that betting on the failure of this government from politics is the most trivial matter of all, because it is thinking about searching for space power and not about solving the Argentine problem. This was the attitude of the professional team, and you will find us there, supporting everything that needs support for Argentina to do well.
Something that has defined the PRO Party almost since its birth has been respect for institutions and republicanism, something that Miley mocked when she talked about “Republican nerds.” Doesn’t what’s happening or what could happen with Miley cause a stir in that regard?
And in the last period before the elections, in the last months of 2023, this uproar in the government was also due to a lack of respect for those issues that you rightly pointed out. I think the government has taken note of this. In short, the Argentine democratic political system is successful, and what needs to be strengthened are the institutions. People and politicians, we are here today, not tomorrow. We are situational and we have to do our best when we have to be there. Now, if those in power, or any government, devote themselves to blowing up or weakening institutions, this is the greatest harm that can be done.
Here the party is clear: its DNA is to defend institutions and the republic, because no development is possible for a country with weak institutions. This has been proven. So, we have to strengthen institutions, give them the ability to govern, and I think the balance between what happened in the Senate, in the representatives and the executive branch is important.
This is the path the government has now taken: agreements and meetings. As I have said repeatedly in the Senate, without seeking agreements, dialogue and consensus, it is impossible to pass laws, and I think that is the dynamic from now on as well. Because although the choice made by the government was very good, it did not have a majority in the representatives or in the Senate. It does not have 20 senators, and needs at least 37 to get its quorum and open the session. Therefore, you will have to talk and look for meetings.I believe this is the path to follow.
Mauricio Macri chairs a meeting of the PRO National Council to discuss its relationship with La Libertad Avanza
Part of the PRO bloc decided to go to La Libertad Avanza. How do you take this?
These are personal decisions. I don’t think quitting a game where you got a seat or gave you a chance is a simple matter. It’s a very personal decision. Obviously I don’t share it. I think you have to represent the place you are chosen for. But these are personal desires, as there are also many officials who were from our party and are today in the executive authority. Without going any further, the new Minister of the Interior, Diego, SantelliHe is one of the leaders of the Ennahdha Party, which topped the list in the last elections in agreement with the party. This is part of the support that is being provided now. Switching to a bank is a very personal decision. I think one can continue to defend the government from where it belongs, in my case from the prosecution, and that is the route I will take. After that, they are purely personal decisions.
Mauricio Macri was not invited to attend Santelli’s swearing-in. He was invited to Olivos, and while there, he learned of the departure of Guillermo Francos. Is there any mistreatment of the former president?
It may be due to certain positions or shapes. It is difficult for me to give an opinion in this sense because I do not know how intimate those meetings and conversations that the president had with Macri were, and whether there were commitments that were not fulfilled or not. I don’t know, so I prefer not to give a personal opinion. Now, from a political point of view, what I can say is that President Macri has shown complete support, and in the most difficult moments of this government, like that massive bank run that the United States later intervened in, President Macri went to Olivos and publicly stated that we have to support the government. I think Macri’s attitude was always positive and of tremendous greatness as a former president Macri’s support for the government is not as appreciated as it should beBut I don’t know what private conversations are and the reason for those messages.
The legislative agenda is coming. How do you see what’s coming? Budget and labor market reform seem to come first. Do you think there will be a budget and that labor reform will happen?
I think so. Argentina can no longer resist a third year without a budget. Everyone is trying to achieve a successful outcome and I believe we will achieve that. Negotiating with governors, representatives and senators will also be necessary. Many of us represent our provinces, so there will be debate to approve this budget, but everyone realizes that we need it.
And then there too Labor, tax and criminal reformThese are the three projects that they had previously announced their intention to send, although they have not sent them yet. I don’t know what those bills are, but from what I talked to most senators about, Everyone agrees that these reforms are necessary. These are structural reforms that Argentina needs to discuss, and I believe they will naturally be supported through discussion and negotiations.
That’s why things won’t go 100% the way the executive wants, because we all want to have our say or contribute some kind of change. But discussion is healthy and necessary. Argentina urgently needs to update its labor laws. We have laws dating back to the 1970s and today we discuss the impact of AI at work. It is clear that, thanks to these laws, we will not be able to generate more empty jobs or push millions of Argentines out of the informal sector. We want all blocs to have this discussion, and it is healthy for that to be the case. We hope that we can come up with a reform soon so that the labor market becomes more dynamic in Argentina.
Were they left without leave? Will it be a lot of work?
I hope so. Not yet, but from what is clear, the first thing will be exceptional regarding the budget and then other laws. The urgency of these reforms, to me, is fundamental. If we want to revitalize the economy, and start generating jobs, investment and consumption, I believe tax reform and labor reform go hand in hand, and they are discussions that cannot be postponed. The more the better.
