Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira arrived in Toronto, Canada, at around 3:50 pm on Monday (10/11) – Brasilia time – to participate in a meeting of the G7, the group of seven most developed countries.
The Brazilian advisor hopes to hold a bilateral meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to negotiate tariffs against Brazilian products. However, as of the last update of this report, the meeting had not been confirmed.
Vieira will participate in the meeting of foreign ministers and guests of the G7 (such as Brazil), which will be held on November 11-12. The minister left the city of Santa Marta, Colombia, on Monday morning, after participating in the Summit of the Community of Latin American Nations (CELAC).
Last Wednesday (5/11), during the agenda in Belém, Vieira spoke about the trip to Canada and highlighted the expectations of the meeting with the North American Minister.
He stated, “The negotiations are continuing, and they are continuing, and there have been virtual meetings of the technical teams and they will continue. I will be at the G7 meeting in Canada next week, where the Minister of Foreign Affairs will also be present and I will continue to maintain the contacts I have regularly had with him.”
Trump, tariffs, and Brazil
- Trump has been threatening the world with trade tariffs since the beginning of his term, and he paid special attention to the BRICS group – Brazil.
- The North American president even threatened to impose 100% tariffs on member states of the bloc that do not submit to “US commercial interests.”
- After defending former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Trump threatened to increase tariffs on Brazilian exports.
- The North American leader claimed that Brazil does not “deal well” with the United States.
- Trump’s 50% rate took effect on August 1, and is being imposed separately from sectoral tariffs, such as those already affecting Brazilian steel and aluminum.
- In April this year, Brazil had already been hit by Trump’s tariffs, and its products were initially taxed at 10%.
Negotiate pricing
On October 16, Vieira and Rubio held a meeting at the White House in Washington to discuss rates. According to the Brazilian advisor, the conversation took place in an “excellent relaxed atmosphere” and was productive.
At the meeting, the Chancellor reiterated the Brazilian position calling for “a rollback of the measures taken by the North American government as of July.”
Two weeks later, the talks advanced after a meeting between Lula and Trump in Malaysia. At the end of the first bilateral meeting between the Presidents of Brazil and the United States of America, it was agreed that the Brazilian government would send a delegation to Washington as soon as possible to discuss the customs tariff.
The trip was expected to take place in the first week of November, which did not happen.
