More than 8,000 people were evacuated this Wednesday (12/11/2025) and 51 were injured in Taiwan ahead of the arrival of Typhoon Vung Wong, a storm that, despite being downgraded to a tropical storm in recent hours, has caused flooding in several areas of the island’s east coast.
Schools and offices were closed in the southern and central half of Taiwan due to the storm, which occurred at 12:15 p.m. The hurricane occurred (04:15 GMT) about 130 kilometers west of the southern tip of the island, with maximum wind speeds of 64.8 kilometers per hour and gusts of 90 kilometers per hour, according to the Central Meteorological Agency.
The Central Emergency Operations Command stated this morning that 349 incidents of varying severity were recorded throughout the territory of the island, including 99 incidents related to floods, the majority of which (76) were in the eastern Yilan Province, according to the Chinese Central News Agency.
Between Monday and eight o’clock on Wednesday morning, the amount of rain accumulated in this area ranged between 724.5 and 1061.5 mm, and pictures broadcast on local television showed completely submerged streets.
Rainfall breaks historical record
The provincial government noted that Tuesday’s rain broke historical records and that many areas in the coastal municipality of Suao and around the Dongshan River are still under water, up to 60 centimeters deep.
The authorities also succeeded in evacuating 8,326 people in 10 provinces and cities, most of them in the eastern Hualien region (5,305), Yilan (1,465) and the southern city of Kaohsiung (348).
According to the CWA, Fung-wong remains a threat to southern Taiwan and is expected to bring heavy rain to the central and southern regions overnight on Wednesday, when the eye of the storm makes landfall at the southern tip of the island.
Over the weekend, this typhoon hit the Philippines hard, leaving heavy rains and severe flooding in its wake that killed at least 18 people and forced the preventive evacuation of 1.4 million people on Luzon, the island where Manila is located.
