Madrid, November 12 (European Press) –
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked on Wednesday the “amazing” support provided by US President Donald Trump, after the latter sent a letter to his Israeli counterpart Isaac Herzog, asking him to consider the possibility of pardoning his country’s prime minister in the corruption cases he faces.
Netanyahu said in a brief statement posted on his personal page on the social networking site “X”: “Thank you, Trump, for your wonderful support. As always, you get straight to the point and tell it as it is. I look forward to continuing our cooperation to enhance security and consolidate peace.”
This is not the first time that Trump has called for Netanyahu to receive a pardon. During his visit to the country last October, the mogul urged New York to adopt the measure and downplayed the fact that the Israeli president had accepted gifts from billionaires.
The White House resident was surprised by the Israeli leader’s involvement in a “politically motivated” lawsuit since 2020, and described the crimes with which Netanyahu is accused as “unjust charges aimed at causing great harm to him.”
Netanyahu’s trial began in May 2020 and focuses on three separate corruption cases in which he is accused of fraud, breach of trust, and accepting bribes. The most serious of these cases, known as Case 4000, alleges that the prime minister used his position to benefit the majority shareholder of telecom giant Bezeq in exchange for positive coverage on a popular news website, an accusation he denied.
