Newcastle says French police attacked fans after the match

Newcastle traveled to France and lost to Olympique Marseille 2-1 in a Champions League match. However, the English club informed UEFA that French police “randomly attacked” fans after the match.

The leaders stated that the incident amounted to “unacceptable treatment” and reported the situation to Europe’s highest authority.

The club stated: “Once the first group of fans were released, the police began using unnecessary and disproportionate force to prevent the rest of our fans from moving. This was done through a combination of pepper spray, batons and shields, with a number of fans being attacked indiscriminately by the police.”

The Magpies’ request is for UEFA to investigate and punish those responsible. The group is still in contact with police in England to access evidence. Newcastle stated that fans remained in the stadium for an hour until the final whistle and 500 people were escorted to the subway.

The club added: “The safety and well-being of fans must always be of the utmost importance, and we strongly condemn the police’s treatment of our fans during this incident.”
