“In the equipment of City Hall, no one who defends Nazism will play or sing,” São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) said on Monday (10) when asked about rapper Kanye West’s concert scheduled for November 29 in the capital São Paulo.
The mayor said in the column that he did not know the singer before the show was announced and that “it seems bad for City Hall for an openly Nazi to perform in São Paulo.”
In February, the singer made statements in which he was alleged to be a racist, a Nazi, and an anti-obesity fan.
Among the more controversial comments, Kanye said: “I’m a Nazi” and “I love Hitler.” He also again attacked the Jewish community, saying he had no intention of apologizing for his previous statements and that he would continue to express his views freely.
On Monday, Nunes participated in a ceremony in honor of the 90th birthday of Ives Gandra.
Also present were former President Michel Temer, Governor Tarcisio de Freitas (Republicans) and Representative Lucas Boff (PL-SP).
As it appears from bound, Kanye West’s performance does not have a set location yet. Initially scheduled to be held at the Autódromo de Interlagos, the show had to be moved, and 21 days before the event, it continues without a new venue.
Organizers say the show will go on. “He wants to come, we want to come, so let’s make it happen,” says Guilherme Cavalcanti, one of the event’s four partners. “You’ve been charged a very high fee, and there’s no way to cancel the offer. But it also can’t be done anywhere.”
Cavalcanti says the production surprised the city of São Paulo, which was unilaterally withdrawing from the racetrack use agreement. “From my point of view, it was a joke,” he says. “We only pay the artist because they confirmed the location. How can you provide proof of payment and confirmation of the location, in a huge and very expensive show? Their negligence is ridiculous.”
Nunes, in turn, stated that the municipal administration would not allow events with Kanye West to be held if there were demonstrations considered pro-Nazi. “We do not accept that and we will do everything necessary so that no one who supports Nazism carries out any kind of activity here in the city of São Paulo,” the city’s mayor said.
