The Paraná Environmental Technology and Monitoring System (Simepar) on Monday confirmed the occurrence of three hurricanes in the state during last Friday’s storms, with winds reaching speeds of up to 330 km/h in Rio Bonito do Iguaçu. In addition to this case, the agency has also identified formations in Torvo and Guarapuava, in the south-central part of the state. Conclusions were obtained from analysis of radars, videos, flybys and ground inspections, and other possible events are still under investigation.

Hurricane Rio Bonito do Iguaçu was classified as Category F3 on the Fujita scale – which ranges from F0 to F5 – and wind speeds were estimated between 300 km/h and 330 km/h. The supercell storm hit the urban area around 6 p.m., destroying homes, warehouses and power transmission lines.
Later, two other severe storms also generated tornadoes. In Guarapuava, the phenomenon was classified as F2, with wind speeds approaching 250 km/h, mainly affecting the Entre Ríos area. In Torvo, south of the municipality’s central area, the hurricane was also classified as Category F2, with winds estimated at 200 km/h.
According to the agency, Friday’s weather conditions – characterized by extreme heat, high humidity and extreme instability – created an environment conducive to the formation of severe storms. The intensification and change in wind direction at different levels of the atmosphere contributed to the occurrence of tornadoes.
In addition to the analysis of images from the Cascavel meteorological radar, records taken by residents and the local press and aerial flights conducted by a meteorologist in Simibar accompanied by engineers from the fire department of the Rio Bonito do Iguaçu region helped in the investigation.
The agency said new inspections will be conducted in the coming days to verify additional reports of high winds and possible tornado formations in other areas of the state.
Governor Ratinho Junior (PSD) declared a state of general disaster in Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, with about 90% of buildings affected, he said. The decree has been recognized by the federal government.
– We are here to conduct a local survey of the damaged infrastructure. Since about 90% of the city was affected, a state of general disaster was declared, allowing us to provide assistance faster and release resources. The governor said: “I have already decided that Kohabar is studying strategies for rebuilding homes and we are preparing accommodation to ensure families are supported.”
On Saturday, the Minister of Corporate Relations, Glessy Hoffmann, also visited the city, accompanied by teams from the National Civil Defense. She informed that the Federal Government has activated the Caixa Econômica Federal to accelerate the withdrawal of the FGTS due to the disaster of the affected workers.
Furthermore, the state government sent a bill to the Legislative Assembly to allow the transfer of up to R$50,000 to each family that lost their home in the disaster.
