Flamengo’s victory in the 2025 Copa Libertadores revived an old phenomenon from the stands: transforming “First Errors”, the most played song of the Capital Inicial group, into one of the most emblematic songs for the red and black fans. Released in the 1980s, the song written by Kiko Zampianchi has gained new life in Brazilian football thanks to the creativity of organized fans. You don’t need to be a die-hard Rio fan to hear “Em 81 December”, a parody praising the team.
- “A different kind of childhood”: Near the end of Stranger Things, the young cast recounts what it was like growing up in front of the cameras
- Zap’s friend: Virginia Fonseca explains the details of the beginning of her relationship with Vinny Jr.: “No kiss, just talk.”
In fact, this chant began spreading among fans more than a decade ago. But in the wake of the 2019 campaign, the song established itself as a popular anthem, and was renamed “M81 December”. The full-back makes a direct reference to the World Cup that Flamengo won that year, when the club beat Liverpool in Japan. The anniversary has become a symbol of pride and identity for fans. Since then, the adaptation has gained strength.

Rubro Negro wins the title and becomes the first Brazilian team to win the Copa Libertadores four times
And more. This modification gained strength as parties in the Maracana grew and began to be sung by tens of thousands of voices in decisive matches, including international duels. The words, which celebrate red and black superiority in the historic confrontation against the English, have become a constant presence in viral videos, sports programs and social networks.
Kiko Zampianchi, the composer of the original score and a fan of Santos, commented on several occasions that he was surprised to learn that his song had been remixed by fans. The musician often remembers that he received the news from his friend Marcelo Cerrado, who was on the field and was happy to see the “first mistakes” take on new features in the world of football.
The success of the adaptation contrasts with the sad origin of the song, which Kiko created during a difficult personal moment, marked by anxiety and loneliness after moving to São Paulo. “The lyrics were composed at a time when I was suffering from panic syndrome and had not yet been diagnosed. The disease did not exist and I had been suffering from it for a long time. I was in São Paulo. It was a period of extreme loneliness, and I had come from Ribeirão, where I was a famous guy, I knew everyone, I had a lot of friends. And I arrived in São Paulo, this thing, no one knows anyone”, he recalls in an interview with “G1”. 2023.
About ten years after its release, the song received a new interpretation in Simone’s voice, which took it to the soundtrack of the TV series “Cara e Corona” (1996). The great national drive would come later, with the capital Inicial. The group – which was going through a difficult phase and had spent a period without Dinho Ouro Preto – put “First Mistakes” back on the map by including it in the repertoire of the album “Acústico MTV” (2000). Kiko Zambianchi participated in the recording on guitar and backing vocals.
Lyrics of the song “In December 81”
The lyrics of “Em 81 December” which keeps the same melody as “First Mistakes” are as follows:
Put English in the ring
It has been marked in history
And in Rio there is nothing like it
Only Flamengo is world champion
