Petrobras reported on Monday (11/17), through a statement sent to the Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM), that it had identified the presence of “excellent quality” oil in the Campos Basin area, on the coast of Rio de Janeiro.
The company’s new discovery was made in the post-salt Campos Basin, in an exploration well in the Sudoest de Tartaruga Verde area.
What Petrobras says
In the letter to CVM, Petrobras informed that the well was located 108 kilometers off the coast of Campos dos Goytacazes (RJ), at a depth of 734 metres.

According to the company, the first tests, which included electrolysis, gas signals and fluid collection, confirmed the presence of oil.
“Drilling of this well has already been completed, and the oil containment interval has been confirmed through electrical profiles, gas markings and fluid sampling,” says Petrobras.
Also according to the state-owned company, the samples will be sent for laboratory analysis, which will allow a more detailed analysis of the conditions of the existing reservoirs and fluids, which will enable further assessment of the potential of the area.
The Sudoeste de Tartaruga Verde block was acquired in September 2018, in a fifth production sharing round, with Pré-Sal Petróleo SA (PPSA) as manager. Petrobras is the block operator and holds a 100% stake.
