The mercenary individuals occupying Congress do not care if people suffer as a result of the climate emergency; How are millions around the world already suffering, as the state of Paraná recently witnessed a hurricane that destroyed cities, as will happen to Tuvalu, a country that will disappear due to rising sea levels; All of this is a result of climate change.
These, who do not care about future generations and aim only for the economic profit of sectors that have benefited from the destruction of nature and the violation of human rights, dropped their veto on the demolition bill, which profoundly changes the environmental license and weakens land protection. They are exempt from responsibility and want permission to end protected areas.
Devastação PL is considered the biggest setback in the country’s environmental policy in more than four decades. Ironically, the veto was overturned a week after the 30th session of the Conference of the Parties, held in Belém, Pará. As the world met and debated, seeking consensus on fighting the climate crisis, Congress planned how to make the crisis worse.
This unconstitutional law increases the risk of environmental disasters, encourages the dismantling of environmental protections and rights – by granting environmental licensing automatically, without federal technical coordination – and allows large projects and dams to advance without environmental impact and risk studies.
Through surface assessments, this flexibility accelerates the approval and promotion of high-impact projects on indigenous lands, quilombolas, riparian communities, and peripheral communities. In a country suffering from massive environmental racism and social inequality, they want to make life worse for our communities.
This new law will affect 80% of quilombola lands and 32% of indigenous lands in the demarcation process, according to the Oceanic Social Institute. We live in Marianas and Brumadinho, but they, like the coup plotters, now want amnesty for those who commit environmental crimes.
They will put the Atlantic Forest, the country’s most threatened biome, at greater risk, allowing deforestation only with municipal approval, ignoring the Atlantic Forest Act. It is the end times, as Congress attempts to end climate, rivers, forests, communities, and anything that can guarantee us a possible future and a livable homeland.
Those who voted to override President Lula’s veto declared war against the environment and the entire planet. May we remember them in the upcoming elections as defenders of death and destruction.
Despite this blow, we will rise up against those who threaten our future. The battle is not over yet. Organizations such as the Climate Observatory have already announced that they will approach the STF to challenge the constitutionality of this law, which violates Art. Article 225 of the Constitution stipulates that all citizens have the right to enjoy a healthy environment. Let’s all say no to PL of Devastation together.
