Since Tuesday, Bahia’s military police have imposed a siege on two of the main factions active in the state that are fighting for control of territory in the Reconcavo Bayano region. So far, nine suspects have died and five others have been arrested in the cities of São Felix, Caqueira and Moritiba.

According to sources heard by GLOBO, the siege targets the Comando Vermelho (CV) and the local faction Bonde do Maluku (BDM). About 200 police officers were mobilized to work in a forested area in the area, where the gang members fled. Aerial photos show the suspects, believed to be from the BDM movement, carrying weapons in the middle of the forest. see below:

The siege began after the authorities received intelligence information indicating that one of the two factions would attack the other, which prompted police officers to anticipate and take action at the beginning of the week. The decision of a Cachoeira CV member to change sides and join the BDM in São Felix was one of the factors that contributed to the exacerbation of factional tensions.
In cooperation with his new allies, the former CV member organized an attack on his former partners on the other side of the Paraguaçu River, which separates the two cities. Aware of the movement, police officers were deployed in the forest area used by criminals to move from one city to another. However, members of the Rio faction were also present at the scene, O GLOBO found.
The intensity of the conflict between the factions and the police has escalated over the past 48 hours. In the early hours of Tuesday morning, police clashed with the suspects, resulting in the death of one person. Due to the exchange of fire between the factions, the municipality of Moritiba suspended public services and advised residents not to leave their homes. Health units in São Felix began working with reduced hours, a measure declared to be of a “preventive nature.”
On Wednesday, two more men were shot and killed in another confrontation with police on the banks of BR-101. Hours later, authorities confirmed the death of five more. The criminals allegedly attacked the police officers, who returned fire. They were transferred to the health unit, but they did not survive. On Thursday, another suspect died after resisting arrest.
Also on Thursday, the Prime Minister’s Air Group was called in to participate in operations in the region. During the morning, police teams found a camp used by members of a faction in a densely forested area between São Felix, Caqueira and Moritiba. According to Bahia’s Public Security Secretariat, about 30 suspects were hiding in the forest between the three municipalities.
