For a long time, the artist Julio Valagand, insightful if ever there was an artist, playful and sarcastic like few others, has devoted himself to analyzing the great genres of ancient painting through his prism.
His approach, as in previous cases, revolved around questioning the content … Power and what is established through the use of humor and sarcasm as main weapons, seasoned by A A special interest in popular, banal and neglected culture.
And so, when it was the turn of the photo, and with his then gallery, 6más1, he launched one of his most suggestive and funny projects entitled “A real gallery of pictures of people who don’t exist.” It was a question of returning about 30 original paintings to the market, but by anonymous authors or simple amateurs who were now passing through the sieve of the “signature” of a “recognized” author, diluting the authorship with the complicity of as many people as possible: 30 godfathers each chose one of those paintings based on Arbitrary standards such as personal taste And those who were asked to invent their own story, and compose a biography of the person being photographed.
With these statements, which were more plausible than truthful, and not at all contradictory, Valagan then prepared to ‘complete’ the work, intervening in it to adapt it to the ‘new requirements’ of the specialists. Sculpture Agents Virginia Torrente, Tania Pardo, Sima DaCosta Or Raphael Doctor entered the arena and decorated the project that became an exhibition in 2023 in Aljibe Room from CIC El Almacén in Arrecife (Lazarote).
Now this refreshing madness takes the form of a book containing the initial musings of those summoned, Valagan’s pictorial results and the supplementary texts of Three Luxurious Canaries: amelia Alvarez,Adonay Bermudez and Jose R. Betancourt. They all “portray” themselves with charisma and eloquence.
