Madrid, November 18 (European Press) –
North Korea’s government warned Tuesday that the nuclear program South Korea is working on with the United States, which includes its neighbor building a nuclear submarine, would represent a “domino effect” in the region, as well as a “dangerous attempt at confrontation.”
Pyongyang points to the trade and security agreement with the United States announced by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung last week, which includes plans to develop nuclear-powered ships.
Pyongyang warned, according to the North’s Korean Central News Agency, that “South Korea’s possession of a nuclear submarine is a strategic maneuver for its nuclear militarization, which will inevitably lead to a nuclear domino effect in the region and lead to an intensified arms race.”
The North Korean government has indicated that this type of agreement is a sign of the “hostility” of Washington and Seoul, as well as their interest in denuclearizing only the north of the peninsula, and not the entire region, as it has repeatedly said.
He added, “The danger of a global nuclear arms race resulting from nuclear proliferation in a non-nuclear country,” referring to Seoul, which obtained approval to enrich uranium and reprocess spent nuclear fuel within the framework of this agreement with Washington.
Likewise, he emphasized that having a nuclear submarine is a “long-cherished” ambition of South Korea and not a measure to counter North Korea’s acquisition of this type of weapon. In the same way, it shamed its neighbor that it took a “servant” position towards Washington to achieve that end.
In this sense, Pyongyang emphasized that this new agreement is part of the US “strategy” of using South Korea as a “shock power” to achieve its interests in the Asia-Pacific region.
