The city of São Paulo reported that 25 motorcyclists died on the roads waiting to obtain a permit for a special motorcycle lane. The implementation of blue belts depends on the approval of the General Secretariat of National Traffic (Sinatran).
From July 2024 to October 2025, authorities recorded 647 accidents on 73 roads awaiting a signal. The administration of Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) has promised to activate 80 kilometers of the already designed blue lines.

Blue belt in Sao Paulo
- Developed by the São Paulo Traffic Engineering Company (CET), the Blue Line physically separates the flow of motorcycles from the rest of the traffic.
- The initiative reduces direct collisions between motorcycles, cars and trucks, significantly reducing the severity of accidents.
- CET studies showed a 47% reduction in mortality in departments where the structure was implemented.
- Since January 2022, when the program was established, the city municipality has already implemented 232.7 kilometers of blue belt on 46 roads in the city.
According to the city hall, these corridors have already been mapped, marked and technically prepared for the project – the only thing missing is a federal license. The applications submitted to Sinatran were divided into two sets of copies: the first has been awaiting licensing since July 2024 and the second since January of this year.
