Who is Sandrao?
Sandra Regina Ruiz came into the limelight after releasing the Amazon Prime Video series Tremembé. She gained national fame when she became involved with Susan von Richthofen and Elise Matsunaga while serving her sentence.
The story of Sandrao’s involvement with Susan and Elise is covered in the books Elise Matsunaga: The Woman Who Dismembered Her Husband and Susan: Assassina e Manipuladora, by Ulysses Campbell (ed. The Matrix).
First, she became involved with Elise in Tremembe, and then had a relationship with Susan, whom she married in prison.
The crime committed by Sandrao
Sandrau was a poor woman who lived on the outskirts of Mogi das Cruzes (SP). She and her boyfriend at the time, Valder Ferreira Martins, decided to kidnap a teenager. The idea was that the two would use the young man’s ransom money to visit the island of Fernando de Noronha and buy a car.
Talison, 14, is the son of Sandra’s neighbor and friend Ana Maria, and was chosen as a target by bandits because their house was the most beautiful on the street. The house also stored two cars, which increased the motive for the crime.
The young man was kidnapped at noon on October 21, 2003 by one of Sandra’s accomplices known as Formiga. They improvised captivity at an unoccupied Valder family estate and the young man was locked in a suite to avoid contact with the rest of the house and the kidnappers.
The kidnapping continued for three days with back-and-forth negotiations over the ransom amount. The first demand was for R$40,000 and the amount decreased when the criminals realized that the family would not be able to pay. In between, Sandra spent a lot of time in captivity and soon after returned to Talison’s parents’ house and consoled her friend. She even simulated some conversations with the bandits while trying to negotiate the ransom amount.
The amount collected by the victims was R$4,500: R$2,000 was obtained by a loan and another R$2,500 was collected with the help of neighbors, an initiative proposed by Sandra. The money was left in a trash can near the Praz Copas train station, on the outskirts of Mogi das Cruzes, where the group was able to collect it immediately.
But when they returned to captivity, they discovered that Talison had managed to escape from the ward, but was unable to leave the house and stayed in the living room watching television. He recognized Sandra and her boyfriend Valdir immediately, so the gang made the decision to kill him.
They decided to move him to a place known as Prainha, far away from the city. There, they killed the young man with a .38-caliber Russian pistol. It was Formiga who shot him, who was 17 years old at the time. The attempt was that he would not pay anything because he was a minor.
Investigations
Investigations into the case led the police to the criminals by violating the confidentiality of the phone. Formiga ended up confessing to the entire crime and was arrested and punished with social and educational measures, as stipulated in the Child and Adolescent Act (ECA).
Sandra and Valdir were sentenced for the crime: she was sentenced to 27 years in prison, which ended up being reduced to 24 years for not participating in the execution of the teenager, and he was sentenced to 30 years.
