The device is lightweight, needs to be charged every 36 hours and issues alerts in the event of damage or escape from the home
The electronic ankle bracelet has been the subject of a lot of Brazilian news since last Saturday, the 22nd, when former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) violated the device monitoring his house arrest. The former agent used a soldering iron to damage the case, which led to his pretrial detention for failure to comply with precautionary measures.
You may be wondering how this device works and, in turn, how this device works land I went to Synergye’s headquarters in São Paulo to understand how this monitoring is done. The company specializes in this type of service and serves the states of Amazonas, Ceara, Maranhão, Pará, Roraima, São Paulo, Sergipe and Rio Grande do Norte. In addition to Brazil, the company also provides services to Colombia, where its average number reaches 25 thousand.
On site, the reporter was able to take a closer look at the ankle bracelet and its lock, how the system recognizes whether the device has been tampered with or the battery is low, the recording and what signals are emitted in the event of damage.
Equipment
This model, similar to the one used by Bolsonaro, weighs 100 grams and has a fiber-optic mounting strap and a case. The device fits in the palm of your hand, has a battery life of about 36 hours, and takes up to two hours to charge.
This ankle bracelet uses two cell phone operators, to avoid signal loss, and has encrypted transmissions, preventing information from being cloned. Monitoring is carried out via GPS, and in addition to 2G, 3G and 4G technologies, it uses Wifi and Bluetooth.
The piece is also waterproof, so a prisoner cannot take it off without permission from the court. So it can be used in the bathroom for example.
Watching
As explained by Bruno Almeida, Synergye’s commercial director, the item contains a communication module and a positioning module as well.
“The communication module takes the information from the ankle bracelet and sends it to our data center, which in turn sends it to our monitoring software. The location collects the exact location of the person being monitored,” he points out.
According to him, no matter where the detainee is, it is possible to monitor him, as the equipment has sensors that can recognize both the break of the seal, the fastening belt, as well as the condition, as was the case with Bolsonaro.
Moreover, the ankle bracelet determines the distance from the residence through a group that can identify the trace of that person. Depending on the situation, within 30 seconds, you will already have a record of that user’s situations.
It can be seen in the images that when the prisoner is within the permissible range, the trace is blue. When it crosses the perimeter, the route turns red on the map. (see below).
How does the alert system work?
To set up the equipment, you must first place it on the guest’s ankle. Then his data is entered into the system, according to the judiciary’s recommendation, which indicates the extent to which he is allowed to travel.
If the set limits are exceeded, the anklet’s seal is broken, or it is left with a low battery, an alert is sent to the monitoring system, in addition to vibrating on the user’s leg or even emitting a beep. From here, the Security Secretariat or the body responsible for the detainee is notified, and the officers search for the person being monitored.
In Bolsonaro’s case, the memo from the Center for Integrated Electronic Monitoring (CIME) recorded that the violation alert occurred at 00:07 a.m. on the 22nd, when the escort team was called.
When a prisoner has already served his sentence and fails to comply with the measures imposed by the judicial authority, the prison regime may change.
