Seu Georgi, 55 years old, commented once again on the controversy surrounding the name of his youngest son, Samba, as a result of his union with Karina Barbieri. During the 2025 Potensias Awards, where he was elected Best Actor of the Year, the artist recalled the conflict he faced in 2023, when the registry office refused to register the child with the chosen name and forced him to file an appeal to guarantee the decision.

In an interview with Kim, the singer and actor explained that the name was thought to be a direct tribute to his African roots. He said: “I think this name is very beautiful. It is very present in African culture and brings me closer to my ancestors. I discovered that it is new in Brazil, and I think the controversy came precisely because no one had used it before. Little by little, we are dismantling this matter.”
In 2023, shortly after the birth of the youngest son, Seu Jorge had to deal with bureaucratic problems until he could register the heir in Samba’s name.
He also noted that similar cases had already occurred, citing Gilberto Gil, who faced resistance when registering his daughter Britta.
“There were Claras and Brancas, so why not Britas? I hope there will be Sambas, Britas and Benins,” said the artist, who is also the father of Luz, Flor and Emmy.

When mentioning Benin, Seu Jorge spoke about the experience of working with a young man named after the African country and celebrated recent progress: in 2024, Benin will begin granting citizenship to Brazilian people of African descent.
The decision announced by President Patrice Talon strengthens the historical relations between the two countries. For the actor, this opening symbolizes a reunion with his own history. He added: “We have achieved many victories. We can also realize ourselves through our achievements, not just through our pain.”
