Sony Pictures will take Lapopo to the movies. The studio has acquired the rights to adapt the Chinese doll line that has become a global phenomenon in recent months. The idea is to develop a feature film with the potential to become a franchise, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter.
The project is still in its initial stage. According to the magazine, the agreement closed this week, and at the moment, there is nothing specific regarding the producers, directors, or actors involved. It has not been determined whether the film will be live-action or animated.
Labobo, a mysterious doll sold at a Pop Mart store in Beijing, has become very popular over the past year. There have been battles in stores over the palm-sized plush toys, some of which cost three times their retail price on secondary markets.
They’ve been the constant subject of TikTok videos and created huge lines outside Pop Mart stores from Paris to Los Angeles. Celebrities like Dua Lipa, Rihanna and Blackpink’s Lisa have already worn a version of the monster with a devilish smile as a handbag accessory.
In August this year, Chinese plush toy maker Pop Mart International Group Ltd reported strong growth in revenue and profits. According to Bloomberg, revenues increased by 204% compared to the previous year, reaching 13.88 billion yuan (1.93 billion US dollars or 10.6 billion Brazilian reais) in the first half of 2025, according to the balance sheet released on Tuesday (19). This compares to a growth of 62% in the same period last year. Net profit jumped by 397%, reaching 4.57 billion yuan (3.5 billion Brazilian reals).
