Sixteen works by Tarsila do Amaral are on display for free viewing at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes, the main building of the São Paulo State Government, until January 26.
The exhibition, titled “São Paulo – Paris: The Discovery of Tarsila do Amaral,” brings together 16 paintings – 13 panels and 3 etchings – that characterize the modernist artist’s path between the two cities in the period between 1910 and 1960.
There is, for example, “Retrato de Mário de Andrade”, a work from 1922. The famous “Autrorretrato I”, from 1924 and “Operários”, from 1933 are also on display.
The exhibition highlights the artist’s modernist language and highlights the influences of São Paulo and Paris in her paintings – including elements such as colours, shapes, themes and references to artistic movements.
The displayed works are owned by the state government. Six of them were loaned to recent exhibitions in Paris, France, and Bilbao, Spain.
All exhibition visits are guided by the educational sector team of Acervo dos Palácios, the museum department of Casa Civil responsible for managing the artistic and historical collections of São Paulo’s government palaces. Guides explain the history of the business during the tour.
This is the first time that the government has brought together all of Tarsila’s works in its headquarters building. The gallery occupies the recently restored Salao dos Pratos.
The exhibition is organized by Rachel Vallejo, who is also responsible for the current management of the Palacios Collection.
To visit the exhibition, reservations must be made 48 hours in advance via the website acervo.sp.gov.br/agendamento/agendar. Individual visits take place Monday through Friday.
On Saturdays, Palácio dos Bandeirantes only receives group visits from 10am to 12pm – you need to check availability on the website.
Due to public demand, the government announced the opening of additional sessions at 11 a.m. on Saturdays, November 29, December 13 and 20, in addition to January 10 and 24, 2026.
