The government is experiencing a peak moment. The announcement of the trade agreement between our country and the United States is a confirmation of the unprecedented level of support that the Donald Trump administration has decided to give to Javier Miley. The rescue operation carried out by the White House, in dramatic moments for the Argentine economy, saved the ruling party from a possible defeat to which it would have been led by the crisis caused by a shortage of dollars that worsened after the electoral victory of Peronism in the elections in the province of Buenos Aires.
As always happens, these events are always accompanied by controversy. There are those generated by those who continue to cling to the ideologies and political visions entrenched in time. This passion for historical paradox is what Peronism shows today – as it happened yesterday -. The idea that “they are coming for our sovereignty” is a cliché that has done justice to political consequences and set the country back. Of course, the phrase “they are coming for our sovereignty” applies to the United States and not when making concessions to China or Venezuela. Peronism, especially extreme Kirchnerism, pollutes everything with its mothball-scented ideology and its desperate desire to use power again at all costs.
In addition to the details that are not yet known about this agreement, the announcement of which was delayed due to the US federal government shutdown that was just lifted, there are some specific things that will happen until this is put into place. One of them – which is key – is overall equity leverage. It is known that there will be the arrival of important American businessmen eager to explore new business possibilities. On top of this progress, there will be many workers in the energy sector. In the case of stocks, no one will be able to place a single dollar above very specific opportunities. Investments do not enter where they cannot leave. Another important issue is labor and tax reforms.
Authoritarians don’t like this
The practice of professional and critical journalism is an essential pillar of democracy. This is why it bothers those who believe they are the bearers of the truth.
To achieve these reforms, political consensus is needed. This is what Manuel Adorni and Diego Santelli are working on to contain the disintegration of Peronism and the economic needs of state governors. Today the CGT is one of La Libertad Avanza’s other open battlefronts. Once again, the old positions of the current trade unionists collide with the necessity of the necessary renewal of new forms of work and production. All of this is accompanied by an aggravating factor that is now visible to everyone – more than ever – which is that union members have turned into businessmen – some of whom are millionaires – who refuse to give up their privileges. The Moyano family is the perfect example of this group that uses the sweat of workers to line their pockets. The hollowing out of Camioneros’ social work speaks for itself. But Moyano’s case is not the only one. The model of rich unionists and poor workers has spread widely across time and territory. The model, which is facing a severe leadership crisis revealed by the recent three-party elections for the Peronist trade union, is unable to find a single agreed-upon number that represents the true voice of the workers. In the face of this structure, the ruling party shows excessive optimism. This is not the first time this has happened to a government where everything seems to be running smoothly. History is a realistic school, even though many refuse to look back. With common sense, Jorge Macri warned against excessive optimism, which is always harmful. “Let’s not eat the curve,” the Buenos Aires Prime Minister said. Without going any further, this is what happened to his cousin Mauricio after he won the midterm elections in 2017. It was believed that he “ate” the field, and two years later he suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Kirchnerism. Naturally, for this dramatic ending, the fact that he closed himself into an increasingly smaller circle led by Marcos Peña and a few loyalists had an impact, leading to him losing touch with reality. This is the danger of the iron triangles of life, the magicians and the alternate teachers.
It will also open export opportunities to large sectors of Argentina. One such sector is meat. The challenge here is to know the supply capacity of producers and industry, and the need to cut ties with the old unscrupulous czars and sham companies.
Amid all the comings and goings of reality, Thursday was a good day to fight corruption. On that day, Julio de Vido was transferred to prison again – his future would be a long house arrest – and by the decision of the Criminal Cassation Chamber, it was decided that the hearings in the “Quadernos de Centeno” case would be two hearings per week instead of one hearing as the Federal Oral Court No. 7 had originally ordered. Times of justice must adapt to reality. At the end of the road, conviction awaits all defendants, and this and future governments will have a unique opportunity to end the scourge of overpricing and returns on public works. It is an ancient mechanism perfected by Kirchnerism that not only resulted in huge losses to state coffers, but also claimed the lives of innocent people, as in the case of the Alons tragedy. Corruption kills and this is a lesson that no government should forget.
