The Major League in the United States is considering changes to the calendar and conflict system
The way you see Major League Soccer (MLS) may undergo a profound transformation depending on the direction of the meeting that will be held on Thursday (13) in the United States. The information comes from journalist Thiago Brandão.
At the meeting, which will be attended by representatives of the 30 clubs and League Commissioner Don Garber, some topics will be discussed as they are the most important topics under discussion. Such as, for example, the adaptation of the calendar to European standards, which occurs between August of one year and July of the following year. Currently, the main tournament between American clubs is held in a similar way to Brazil, and lasts from February to December.
Another point of discussion at the meeting is the conflict model where, if the most likely change is approved, it would not happen in the Eastern Conference system and the Western Conference system. In this sense, the regional distribution process will continue, but with the division into five regions, and ensuring a minimum of 34 matches for all teams, between home and away trips, in the qualifying stage.
Regarding the knockout stages, the idea will be to have each region leader qualify directly where the complement will come from the top three in the overall campaign comparison.
The main vision that the MLS CEO sees in this scenario is to strengthen the global character of the league, which has become increasingly evident in recent years. Moreover, the goal (especially the calendar change) is to avoid any conflict with the crucial dates of American Football, the country’s main sports and media product.
The reality is that if the expected course of change is achieved, the impact will not be immediate. This is because the idea is that the amendment to the dispute system will only come into force in 2027.
