The army chief asks Moraes not to handcuff convicted soldiers at the time of their arrest Brazil

The two spoke on Monday (17) at the Army General’s residence in the urban military sector of Brasilia. Defense Minister Jose Monsieur also participated in the meeting.

Among the military personnel indicted by the first commission of the STF in the coup plot are former army commander and former Defense Minister, General Paulo Sergio, and former Minister Augusto Heleno, who led the GSI (Institutional Security Office) under former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

For both, the final detention would have to follow protocols similar to the detention of General Walter Braga Neto, with him separated from the General Staff Room. The most likely location is Planalto Military Command, in central Brasilia.

Braga Neto, in turn, has been imprisoned since last year in a military unit in Rio de Janeiro, where he must remain after Moraes ordered the start of his sentence.

Military personnel may still lose the right to imprisonment in a military unit if their positions and patents are revoked by the STM (Supreme Military Court). In this scenario, they are considered unworthy of the official position and lose the usual benefits of the profession.

The STF published this Tuesday (18) in DJe (electronic newspaper Justice) the ruling rejecting the first appeals of Bolsonaro and the other defendants from the central core of the coup plot, which includes Paulo Sergio and Augusto Heleno.

The official publication of the document opens the deadline for the defense of those convicted to file new appeals in this process.
