The author of the Washington shooting will be charged with murder – DW – 11/29/2025

An American official indicated today, Friday (11/28/2025), that the Afghan man accused of shooting two National Guard members in Washington will be charged with murder after one of them was killed, a day after President Donald Trump pledged to suspend immigration from “third world countries.”

American media reported that the shooter, who was identified by the authorities as Rahmanullah Lakkanwal (29 years old), was a member of the “Zero Units” of the Afghan services, an anti-terrorism group supported by the US Central Intelligence Agency.

“There will undoubtedly be many other charges, but we are working to upgrade the initial charges from assault to first-degree murder,” federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C., Jeanine Pirro, told Fox News.

He added, “It was a premeditated murder. There was an ambush with weapons against people who did not know what was coming to them.”

One guard was killed and another injured

On Thursday, Attorney General Pam Bondi promised to “seek the death penalty” for Lakkanwal, whom she described as a “monster.”

On Thanksgiving Eve, Lakanwal fired a .357 Smith & Wesson pistol at a group of guards who were patrolling near the White House, according to Prosecutor Pirro.

His attack left two people injured: Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Andrew Wolf, 24.

Beckstrom, a member of the West Virginia National Guard, died Thursday from her injuries. Wolf was still “fighting for his life,” according to President Trump.

“We still have hope,” Pirro said of him. “He is still in critical condition. We are doing everything we can to help his family.”

Both were deployed in the US capital as part of the federal government’s crackdown on crime.
