
In Barcelona there was a bench. In Valencia, Ford; In Figo it was Citroen and in Zaragoza, Opel. Part of Autonomous Spain’s economic awakening in the 20th century came thanks to the automobile industry. Not only have they generated thousands of direct jobs, but through their ancillary industry they have created hundreds of thousands of additional jobs and made Spain a global giant in the components industry. Cranks, windows, seats… European roads were filled with “Made in Spain” car parts.
But the sector was forcibly consolidating (for example, General Motors temporarily declared bankruptcy and the Zaragoza plant now belonged to Stellantis, like the one in Vigo), the electric drive curves had reached that point, and it was seriously losing workers (so far this decade, 10%). Spain has done well to explore other areas, but must continue to fight for an industry that expresses the region like no other.
