On Tuesday (11/11), the House of Representatives approved a draft law that exempts from income tax prizes won by Brazilian athletes in international competitions, such as the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, World Championships and other official tournaments. The text now goes to the Senate.
The project was reported by MP Iuncio Oliveira (MDB-CE). The original proposal is from MP Nicolas Ferreira (PL-MG) and was submitted in August 2024, during the Olympic Games in Paris, France.
Nicholas proposed the project after it was reported that Olympic gymnast Rebecca Andrade, a four-time medalist in Paris, would be subject to higher taxes.
The rate applicable to the amount received by athletes will be 27.5%, since all prizes paid by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) and the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB) are above the range of R$ 55,976.16 (YTD).

Representative of the federal government
In response, during the Olympics, the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva published a temporary measure to exempt cash prizes for athletes from income tax.
The text was effective from August to November 2024, but it lost its validity before it became law. Congress chose not to approve the federal executive’s proposal, considering it political opportunism.
