The Discomfort Trilogy: How Caetano Veloso Reinvented Himself in the 2000s

When Caetano Veloso released “Cê” in 2006, the public still considered him the master of smooth guitars, the direct heir to João Gilberto. The elegant and dangerous Caetano has been temporarily cast aside. Instead, the composer seemed willing to experiment with high-pitched guitars, noise and dissonance, speaking in the vocabulary of youth from the early 2000s.

The so-called “Cê Trilogy” – completed by “Zii e Zie” (2009) and “Abraçaço” (2012) – was, in addition to the aesthetic transformation, an emphasis on vitality. Surrounded by young musicians Pedro Sa, Ricardo Dias Gomez and Marcelo Calado, Cayetano immersed himself in contemporary rock music without trying to imitate it, but rather absorbed it.

On “Cê,” the direct and intimate lyrics dismantle any ideal. “Rock” features slang words they learned from their children. “You were killed with me” became a pop culture verse before it became a refrain. The album felt like a shocker, and that was precisely the intent.

With “Zii e Zie,” Caetano has refined the mix. He called the style “transamba”, combining guitars with Brazilian harmonies, and wrote some of the most subtle lyrics. “Abraçaço” concludes the cycle with melody, poetry and maturity – it is an album that balances the ensemble between Cê and Caetano on guitars, creating a luminous combination.

The entire trilogy demonstrated Cayetano moving with the times and competing with it. It shows that aging can be an act of invention, not adaptation. This boldness – this refusal to repeat formulas – will be present when he takes the stage at the Estilo Brasil Festival on December 11 in Brasilia.
