The European Union holds an informal meeting of foreign ministers in Ukraine to show support for its EU accession process and reject an invasion of Ukraine. The meeting is scheduled to take place on December 10 and 11 in the city of Lviv, according to Politico and confirmed by elDiario.es.
“Through our meeting in Ukraine, we will send a clear and unified political message that Ukraine’s future lies within the European Union,” this is what can be read in the invitation that European capitals have begun to receive. The letter was sent on behalf of Denmark, which currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, Taras Kachka.
“The main focus of our discussions will be the progress made by Ukraine on its path towards EU membership,” the letter said. “The meeting will provide an opportunity to take stock of the results achieved, exchange ideas on next steps and reaffirm political support for Ukraine’s reform and integration efforts.”
The proposal to support Ukraine comes as the Commission, in its latest report on accession to the European Union, issued a warning to Ukraine “to maintain momentum and prevent any risk of setback, especially in the fight against corruption. Recent negative trends, such as pressure on anti-corruption agencies and civil society, must be reversed decisively.”
In any case, the main obstacle facing Ukraine is the veto imposed by Hungary, led by the ultra-nationalist Viktor Orban, which refuses to allow Ukraine to join the European club, and accession processes require unanimous approval.
European Council President Antonio Costa tried to persuade the 27 countries to change the voting system so that only a qualified majority was needed on some issues, but he made no progress.
The meeting will be held in Ukraine in light of the lack of any progress in using the frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine’s war against Russia. Belgium continues to veto the use of these assets, and the European Commission has not yet submitted other funding proposals to EU countries.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, will pay an official visit to Spain in a few days (the date is unknown for security reasons), after a telephone conversation between Pedro Sanchez and Zelensky in October.
