The Fluminense goalkeeper was the highlight of the draw against his former club and highlighted the pressure coming from the stands
Goalkeeper Fabio was the big name for Fluminense in the draw against Cruzeiro on Sunday (09/11). Upon his return to Mineirão, the Raposa star made a number of crucial saves. In this way the score was 0-0. The result, in fact, adds an important point for Tricolor in the fight for a place in the Libertadores. After the match, the 45-year-old goalkeeper highlighted the difficulty of facing his former club in a crowded stadium.
In an interview with TV Globo, the experienced goalkeeper highlighted the pressure coming from more than 53,000 fans.
“It’s a tough game. It’s always difficult to play against Cruzeiro. The fans come and cheer us on all the time,” Fabio said.
Furthermore, he talked about his motivations:
“We always want to do our best, regardless of whether we play Cruzeiro… Thank God today, I had the opportunity to make a good save. Congratulations to everyone.”
Fabio had a great game against his former club
In fact, Fabio’s performance was decisive. He made important interventions, especially on left-back Kaikeyi’s shots. For example, when he was 35 in the first half, he blocked a header against the post from crossing the goal line. Soon after, when he was 40, he stretched out to fire a powerful shot. The veteran also worked on attempts by Caio Jorge and Fabricio Bruno.
Fabio is the club record holder for Cruzeiro, having made 976 appearances. With the club, he won two Brazilian League titles and three Brazilian Cups. But his departure was controversial. At the beginning of 2022, Ronaldo Nazario’s Saudi Football Federation offered him just a three-month contract to finish his career. He refused, and went to Fluminense, where he became Libertadores champion in 2023.
