The Fernández-Vega Institute promotes the creation of a new international medical research space

Three distinguished academic institutions will now join their efforts through a new space for medical research and innovation, supported by a center created thanks to the support of famous Mexican businessman and philanthropist José Antonio Fernández Carvajal (born in Asturian) and Eva Garza Laguerra. This center will be established in Oviedo as part of the facilities of the Fernández Vega University Institute and will promote international medical research and training under the slogan: “Where research becomes health.” In this way, Oviedo and Asturias will be strengthened as an international reference in training and research in the field of ophthalmology.

“We want (José Antonio Fernández Carvajal emphasized) that the Medical Innovation and Research Center will be an institution of excellence in knowledge, and in the generation of new ideas, that translate into improving the visual health and quality of life of thousands of people in Spain and Mexico (…) as well as a meeting space for scientists, researchers and entrepreneurs from both countries to develop joint projects and innovative solutions.” Thus, under the protection of the establishment of the aforementioned center, the additional memorandum signed this morning between the Fernández Vega University Institute, TecSalud – the leading institution in health training of Tecnológico de Monterrey – and the University of Oviedo, will allow the teaching and international exchange of students, the development of advanced treatments, medical research and innovation, and the promotion of entrepreneurship in this field.

International influence

The signed alliance will allow the joint development of international projects with high impact in ophthalmology and health sciences-related fields. Moreover, this achievement lays the foundations for future strategic cooperation between Mexico and Spain through the participating institutions.

“The memorandum that we signed today with TecSalud and the University of Oviedo focuses on the areas of medical research, as well as the comprehensive training of researchers and scientists, and will therefore represent a very important advance and a major boost to the profession of Oviedo and Asturias in these areas. We are making a qualitative, quantitative and geographical shift as well. There is no doubt that the unconditional support for this project from José Antonio Fernández Carbajal and his wife Eva Garza demonstrates, in addition to their commitment to science and research, their commitment to their Asturian roots.”

The projects to be developed in the new center will be spread around three main work axes: the Rotants Project, which will promote the exchange and training of students, doctors and health professionals between Mexico and Spain, with scholarship programs promoted by both institutions and the University of Oviedo; The research project, which will strengthen joint projects between TecSalud and the Fernández Vega University Institute, whose central axis is the collaboration with Professor Per Olof Berggren, from the Karolinska Institutet (the center responsible for awarding the Nobel Prize in Medicine annually) and his line of research for transplantation of pancreatic islets in the anterior chamber of the eye and the Lanzadera Project, which aims to promote entrepreneurship in Asturias and create and strengthen scientific and technological companies.

As part of the Center’s presentation and this memorandum, an international scientific meeting was held in which the latest developments in ophthalmology and medical research were presented, with participants of the stature of the famous Swedish researcher Per Olof Berggren, Professor at the Karolinska Institutet and Distinguished Professor in Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the Technology of Monterey.
