The former Mayor of Martinez Soares (MG), Fernando Almeida (PSDB), was shot last Saturday (8) while participating in the making of a car sticker during the campaign for the by-elections scheduled for December 7 in the municipality, within the state of Minas Gerais. He was rescued, underwent treatment at an area hospital, and was released on Sunday (9).

The PSDB in Minas Gerais issued a statement condemning the attack. The party said: “We reject all forms of violence and trust in the rapid action of the military police, civil police and justice to uncover the crime and hold all those involved accountable.”
In a post on social media, Almeida’s team reported that the former mayor was recovering well. The text reads: “We thank God for this great salvation and for every prayer, affection and message we have received in these very difficult days. Fernando is at home, recovering with faith and strength and surrounded by his family.”
The opposition coalition also issued a statement of solidarity. The statement read: “The police forces and competent authorities must take appropriate and necessary measures so that the person responsible for this violent act is identified and brought to justice as quickly as possible. Violence must have no place in our society.”
The Almeida Group also said in a statement: “We reaffirm our commitment to peace and legality during the electoral period in Martins Soares. We hope that the elections will take place safely and normally, with full respect for the popular will.”
Martins Soares is the third municipality in the state of Minas Gerais to hold by-elections for the 2024 elections and the first to have a new vote due to the impeachment of the mayor and his deputy – Paulo Sergio Pereira and Alex Sandro Franco de Andrade, both of the PSDB – for abuse of political and economic power.
This incident occurs amidst a dispute between two parties: Santana Emeric and Marcia, supported by Almeida, for the PSDB-Cidadania and PSD coalition, and Michel Bahia and Renata, for the Republican / PDT / MDB / Mobiliza / Union Brasil da Esperanca (PT, PCdoB and PV) coalition.
