Madrid, November 12 (European Press) –
On Wednesday, G7 foreign ministers from the Canadian Niagara region stressed the “urgent need” for an “immediate” ceasefire in Ukraine, amid doubts about Russia’s commitment to negotiating to end the conflict.
“We reaffirm our firm support for Ukraine in defending its territorial integrity and right to exist, as well as its freedom, sovereignty and independence. We reiterate the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire,” the joint statement said.
In this sense, they agreed that “the current line of communication should be the starting point for negotiations,” although they indicated their “commitment to the principle of not modifying international borders by force.”
Thus, they confirmed that they are exerting economic pressure on Russia and that they are “exploring measures against countries or entities that contribute to financing their war efforts.” They also condemned military aid from North Korea and Iran, as well as China’s supplies of weapons and components.
Finally, they “acknowledged ongoing discussions regarding various financing options,” referring to frozen Russian assets, and took the opportunity to condemn recent Russian attacks against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
