The Ministry of Transport claims to have saved lives with equivalent bumps on the roads, what is the matter?

Parabolic jumps installed in it
Parabolic bumps installed in main lanes aim to reduce speed and protect pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists in Bogotá – Ministry of Mobility

With the installation of 164 parabolic jumps in the main corridors and 26 in the intermediate and local sections, the Ministry of Mobility confirms that Bogota has reduced speed and protected life in areas with a high flow of vehicles.

The balance provided by the entity indicates that the measures are already exceeding the initial target of 150 milestones planned for 2025.

According to the Ministry of Transport, reducing speed on main corridors has reduced the number of vulnerable injuries and increased respect for speed limits.

Results published up to October 31 show a more than 45% reduction in vulnerable injuries and nine lives saved in the corridors intervened, without an increase in traffic congestion.

90% of drivers adhere to the limits set after the intervention.

“We have taken a transformative decision for mobility in Bogotá: to manage speed through comprehensive measures, with technical precision, based on data and evidence, and designed with the firm purpose of protecting the lives of citizens, and the results show that we are on the right track. Today, with all certainty, we can say, with the highlights, that we are already saving lives,” stressed the Minister of Transport, Claudia Díaz.

Intervention on major roads provides varying results depending on the corridor. On Guayacanes Avenue, between South 34A Avenue and Villavicencio Avenue, after a year of operation, no deaths have been reported And a 50% reduction in weak injuries. Night speed decreased from 37% to 10%. It is expected that six lives will be saved annually and injuries will be reduced to 19 people in this section.

The speed bumps were installed on Villavicencio Street, between 38th and 48th Streets, for six months and no deaths were recorded.a 74% reduction in minor injuries and 96% of drivers complying with the speed limit. It is estimated that this measure will save three lives each year and reduce up to 28 injuries.

On Boyaca Avenue, between 24th and 33rd Streets, the first four months of the intervention recorded zero deaths and 90% speed limit compliance.

Annual forecasts indicate the possibility of saving three lives and reducing up to 28 serious injuries in this sector.

The northern section of Boyaca Street, between the Southern Expressway and 11A Bis Street, shows the results after a month of intervention: 50% reduction in vulnerable injuries and 94% compliance with the speed limit.

The General Secretariat estimates that 13 lives could be saved every year, and injuries could be reduced by up to 247 people in this part.

The procedures are being developed in coordination with the Urban Development Institute and the Road Maintenance Unit.

This cooperation has made it possible to enhance the technical aspects of design, construction, signaling and operation of the hills. The process included information sessions for citizens, seeking to discuss the measure and integrate concerns and requests into the implementation process..

The acceptance of the heights is reflected in more than 300 applications from different neighborhoods for new facilities.

The Ministry of Transport confirms upcoming interventions that plan to save up to eight more lives per year, with an additional 37 points in the following ways:

  • Guayacanes Street (between South 63rd and South 43rd Streets)
  • Ciudad de Cali Street (between streets 6D and 15A).

Over the next two years, The administration plans to intervene in the most dangerous 50 kilometers of the road networkAreas where one in four deaths occur due to road accidents.

The strategy of installing parabolic jumps has been reinforced as one of the main bets for road safety in Bogotá, supported by numbers and the support of the intervening communities.

A parabolic shoulder is a curved elevation installed on roads with the aim of safely reducing the speed of vehicles. Their design allows drivers to travel at a set speed, such as 50 km/hWithout the car being subjected to strong shock, vibration or noise.

This alternative is being implemented to improve road safety in high-risk areas, such as nearby schools, hospitals and residential areas.
