US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation last week with Nicolas Maduro, during which the possibility of holding a meeting between the two in the United States was discussed, according to what the New York Times reported, citing anonymous sources. The call, in Which also involved Secretary of State Marco Rubio, occurred days before the State Department’s designation of the Suns Cartel, led by Maduro, as a foreign terrorist organization went into effect.

The sources indicated to the media that although the possibility of holding the meeting was discussed, there are no concrete plans at the present time. The White House declined to comment, but two people close to the Venezuelan government confirmed that the call between the two leaders took place.

Communication occurs amidst escalating tension. The United States maintains a significant military presence in the Caribbean and has used missile attacks against Venezuelan ships accused of drug smuggling. Operations in which more than 80 people were killed.

What the American newspaper revealed comes after a controversial escalation by Trump, who confirmed on Thursday – a week after the call – that efforts to stop Venezuelan drug traffickers “on the ground” would begin “very soon,” suggesting that the outcome of the conversation was not positive.

Trump said at the time during a video conference with US forces to commemorate Thanksgiving: “In recent weeks, they have worked to deter Venezuelan drug traffickers, and they are many.”

The New York Times reported last October that Maduro had offered shares in oil fields in exchange for easing tensions, but negotiations collapsed due to his refusal to leave power after the 2024 elections.
