Urologist Kawi Brunelli Dezzotti, 38, died in Lima, Peru, after being involved in an accident on board a tour bus on the eve of the Copa Libertadores final, played by Palmeiras and Flamengo. A resident of the city of Limeira, located within the city of São Paulo, had traveled days before the decision was made to closely monitor the club he had followed since childhood.

Kai, a respected professional in clinics in Limeira and Campinas, was a professor at the São Leopoldo Mandic College, in Araras (SP) and specialized in robotic surgery. According to his friends, he maintained a secret life and was completely passionate about medicine and Palmeras. In fact, the trip to Peru was the fulfillment of an old wish: to see a continental final in action.

Van Rafael Spadoni, who was traveling with Kay, posted a tribute on social media. He described the trip as a time of celebration and friendship that ended suddenly: “Our trip was special. It was supposed to be a celebration full of laughter and hope, but in the middle of it, tragedy struck us. She left suddenly, leaving a void that was impossible to accept.”

How did the accident happen?

According to the Peruvian National Police, led by Enrique Felipe Monroy, Kay was on the second floor of an open bus that was traveling through the Miraflores neighborhood, one of the most visited areas of the Peruvian capital. While passing under the Bagada Bridge, he hit his head on the structure.

Eyewitnesses reported that a number of fans were standing in the car and did not notice it near the bridge. A doctor tried to administer first aid immediately, but the blood loss was severe and Kai was unable to resist.

Repercussions among the fans and an official memorandum from Palmeiras

On social media, Cauê mainly shared moments from work. News of his death affected his family, friends and other residents of Palmeiras who were already in Lima for the final. Sao Leopoldo Mendic College issued a condolence note on social media mourning the sudden loss.

Palmeiras issued an official statement regretting the death and offering solidarity with the family. The atmosphere of enthusiasm that prevailed in the Peruvian city among fans turned into a state of panic.

The final match of the Libertadores Cup is scheduled to be held at six o’clock in the evening, Brasilia time, at the Monumental Stadium.
