The PP’s Deputy Minister of Education and Equality, Jaime de los Santos, confirmed that the acting state president, Carlos Mazón, was “wrong” because he did not interrupt his agenda on October 29, 2024, the day on which Dana left 229 deaths in the province of Valencia. Moreover, he noted that it would be the judge who would decide whether he had lied or not after requesting the full recordings of the “President”‘s appearances at the Cortes of Valencia and Congress.
“If the judge handling this case finds that there is a lie in any of Mr. Mazzone’s statements, she is the one who should be responsible for resolving it,” declared de los Santos, after the Cataruga judge investigating the criminal case related to the damages requested those recordings to be incorporated into the procedure by which the flood management is being investigated.
In an interview with Europa Press, de los Santos expressed his party’s “absolute respect” for “the work of the judges.” Naturally, he emphasized that “those who constantly lie in the investigating committees of the General Parliament are representatives of the Socialist Workers’ Party.”
Mazzone was to go to the affected municipalities on the 29th
Regarding Mazzone’s management on the day of the tragedy, the Deputy Secretary of the People’s Party referred to statements made by the state president in which he admitted that he should have canceled his agenda that day, in which he had lunch with a journalist in “El Ventoro”.
“I will paraphrase what Mr. Mazzone said. I think he should have suspended the entire agenda that day and gone to the municipalities that were reeling from the tragedy,” de los Santos said.
However, he emphasized that Dana October 29 is also “the result of many wrong decisions” and “extreme environmental policies, which to this day still do not allow the valleys to be cleaned.” Moreover, he emphasized that “not a dime” has been spent to “build the infrastructure” to avoid this kind of “ordeal.”
Reply to Ruffian: “What if I took a picture of those who were killed by ETA?”
De los Santos strongly criticized the intervention of ERC Parliament spokesman Gabriel Ruffian during Mazzone’s appearance after he called him a “murderer” and a “psychopath”, stressing that these are epithets used by “the same people who have no problem agreeing with Beldo”.
“What do you think if, every time I intervene in Congress and Beldo speaks, I take a photo of the children who were killed in Vic, in the barracks in Alicante, in Zaragoza, or of the child who was killed 45 years ago in Extremadura and who was the first child killed in the ranks of the hateful terrorist group ETA?” he asked, after Ruffian showed pictures of Dana’s victims looking like this.
De los Santos highlighted that the ERC is making an agreement with the “heirs” of ETA, however, “it has no problem pointing out to President Mazzone, that of course he was wrong, and that, as he said, he should have interrupted his agenda and gone to the municipalities that were suffering from this enormous tragedy.”
Finally, the leader of the People’s Party expressed his regret over the deaths in this disaster. He stressed: “I am deeply sorry for every death, and I am deeply sorry for every painful circumstance, and I hope that we will return a year and a little earlier so that this does not happen.”
