Founded in 1839 and opened by Pedro II in 1851, the Cemetery of São Francisco
The most visited grave in the cemetery is that of the doctor, writer, journalist and one of the main promoters of spiritualism in Brazil, Bezerra de Menezes. Throughout the year, spiritual followers visit and pay their respects and thanks. Bezerra de Menezes inspired the founding of many spiritual centers, and today followers of the doctrine honor his memory and give thanks for the cures for physical and spiritual ailments attributed to him. A memory that never fades.

The cemetery was built during the Empire to ensure a dignified burial place for slaves and the poor. Therefore, it also became a landmark in Rio de Janeiro’s black history.
