The President of the 30th session of the Conference of the Parties, Ambassador André Correa do Lago, said on Monday (10) that he hopes this edition of the United Nations Climate Change Conference will advance solutions to combat climate change as well as integrate climate into the economy. “Above all else, a COP that will listen to and believe in science,” he said in his opening remarks at the conference.

“We have said it many times, but we have to repeat it, this COP must provide solutions. I believe that the agenda that we have organized for this COP is absolutely essential for the steps forward,” said the ambassador, who officially opened the work of the 30th COP, which runs until November 21, in Belém. Brazil assumed the presidency of the organization, until it is transferred to another headquarters in December next year.
The ambassador stressed that “multilateralism is definitely the way” to follow to combat climate change. “Despite recent setbacks, the living conditions of populations around the world can and must continue to improve. Science, education and culture are the path we must follow,” he defended.
“To combat climate change, multilateralism is definitely the way forward. As much as I doubt I speak well of multilateral diplomacy, I will do so,” he added.
He also criticized the fact that war has once again become close to many people in the world. “We have to humbly and realistically accept the fact that many things are missing. We are almost there, but we have much more to do,” the ambassador said.
