At least two members of the National Guard were injured in a shooting incident that occurred on Wednesday in Washington, DC, near the White House building, the official residence of US President Donald Trump.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that two National Guard members were shot “a few moments ago” in Washington, D.C., and asked the public to “join” her in praying for their recovery.

He added that his administration is working with local police to gather more information in this regard, his profile on social media site X stated.

Trump, who is currently in Florida to celebrate Thanksgiving at his mansion in Mar-a-Lago, announced that “the animal that shot two National Guardsmen, both of whom were seriously injured and have now been admitted to two different hospitals, was also seriously injured.”

Likewise, he expressed through Truth Social that “no matter what, he will pay a very heavy price.” He added: “God bless our great National Guard and all our military and law enforcement forces.”

For its part, the Washington, D.C., police, who indicated that the incident occurred only one block from the White House complex, indicated that “a suspect is in custody.” However, he did not provide further details in this regard, and therefore the causes of the event are unknown.

National Guard troops from several states have been in Washington for months as part of the Trump administration’s blitz on crime in the capital, which has spread to other cities across the country.
