The Supreme Electoral Tribunal’s (TSE) permission to create Misão, Brazil’s newest political party, linked to Movimento Brasil Livre (MBL), will lead members of the group currently in União Brasil to run in the 2026 elections for the newly created party. União members view the movement as a kind of liberation.
They privately admit that there is discomfort within the party towards MBL members. They assessed that MBL used the caption for the group’s interests, receiving resources in the campaign (Read below) while focusing efforts on creating the task.
One union politician said with reservations: “They thank God for getting rid of them. They have no votes, they are just using the party.” Other party officials consulted by the report confirmed this assessment.
Another union parliamentarian said: “The MBL is a separate organization within a bench. Unfortunately, we always suffer from this separation, the inability to rely on the bench in its entirety. There is this reduction in union benches with their departure, but it is a reduction in law more than in reality. Because, in reality, we no longer count.”
“good luck”
Among the names expected to be changed in the Union for the Mission is federal MP Kim Katagwiri (featured image)who received 295,000 votes in 2022, making him the eighth most votes in São Paulo, and state representative Joto Zacarías, who reached 152,000 votes in the Legislative Council (LESP) race. Both are scheduled to switch next year, during the party window, which will take place six months before the election.
According to the mission leaders, the idea is to release names considered stronger for executive positions, such as the government of São Paulo and the presidency. The idea is to prepare tickets in all states, including nominations for governments.

We have to understand every opportunity for someone to create a party. This is the rule and it is within the law. We realize that and agree with it.”
High flights
MBL founder, Renan Santos, is the pre-candidate for Palacio do Planalto. Kim is expected to run for Palacio dos Bandeirantes, but will be free to run for anything he wants in Sao Paulo.
Gutu Zakaria should run for federal MP. For ALSP, the mission operates under the names of Rafael Minatogawa, current vice mayor of Vila Mariana in the city of São Paulo, and Renato Batista, national coordinator of the MBL and deputy state representative.
The party still wants Councilwoman Amanda Vitorrazzo to be a candidate for the Senate in São Paulo. But the parliamentarian has an obstacle in the election law. Since she is a council member, she has no party window to run in the 2024 elections. In order to leave the party without losing her mandate, she must obtain a letter of authorization from the Brazilian Federation.

“Pockylation”
MBL national coordinator and treasurer of the mission, Renato Batista, says the new party will have a tough stance on security as one of its main slogans.
He says the party was inspired by Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador who famously adopted tough and controversial anti-crime measures, such as the state of exception decree and mass incarceration. These measures have sparked numerous criticisms from human rights defenders.
“What we are defending is the model of ‘Bukelization’ in Brazil, as happened in El Salvador, with the construction of huge prisons, with confinement and the formal declaration of war on crime. And of course, in addition to other issues that are already classics of the MBL. A more efficient state, along those lines,” declared Batista, in defense of state reform.
On a partisan and electoral basis, the party says that it is “programmatically” against what it currently is. However, the 2023 MBL conference concluded that it would not make sense to bring back the Electoral Fund.
“Because once this resource is not used, it goes back to the federal government or can be shared by other parties. So it does not make sense for us not to use it. We are giving the little ammunition that we have to our opponents. Now, programmatically, I believe that the Electoral Fund should not exist as it is today, at all. Mission parliamentarians will always defend the reduction of the Electoral Fund. It cannot be as large as it is today,” Batista defended.
