Part of a newly opened bridge collapsed on Tuesday (12) in southwestern China’s Sichuan Province, a few months after its completion. The structure was part of an important highway connecting the interior of the country with the Tibet region. According to local authorities, there is no record of victims.
The Merkang City Government stated that the 758-meter-long bridge, called Hongqi, was closed to traffic on Monday afternoon (11), after cracks appeared on the slopes and nearby roads, in addition to movement in the mountainous terrain in the area.
The ground condition deteriorated rapidly on Tuesday, triggering landslides that led to the partial collapse of the structure.
The Hongqi Bridge was completed earlier this year, according to a video posted by the construction company responsible, Sichuan Road & Bridge Group, on social media. Authorities are now investigating the causes of the collapse and assessing the risk of further landslides in nearby areas.
